In a partnership between Starbucks and environmental charity Hubbub plastic reusable cups will be loaned to travellers visiting Gatwick airport before being dropped at a designated point before catching a flight.
A report in the Times said that plastic reusable cups will be handed out to visitors and though they may show signs of wear and tear they will be washed and sterilised.
Last year around three billion single-use cups were used in the UK with just 4% being recycled.
At present less than 5% of coffee cups are recycled.

Trewin Restorick, chief executive of Hubbub, said: “We know that people care about waste, but it’s often hard to do the right thing when travelling. We want to find out whether people will get on board with reusing cups, if we make it easy and convenient.”

Despite offering discounts of 25p per drink for reusable cup users Starbucks believes just 5% of its customers use them, even with the chain charging 5p for disposable cups.
Hubbub hopes that the four-week trial will save at least 7,000 single-use cups, which are rarely recycled because of the difficulty of separating the plastic inner lining from the paper.
The plastic cups can be washed at least 100 times without being damaged or discoloured, after which they will be recycled to make plastic planks for garden benches.
